Why Learn Another Language?

We’ll put our hands up. We confess. Us English are incredibly lazy when it comes to learning foreign languages. Now, that’s a generalisation, of course, but there is some truth to it. At Inspire, we wish we were more like you! In fact, we’re rather jealous that you can speak more than one language because the benefits of speaking another language speak for themselves. Read on to find out what benefits these might be…

For a start, according to journalist and  lecturer Anne Merritt, ‘physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages is a great asset to the cognitive process.’ So you’re smarter, great. You’re probably quicker at problem-solving and comprehension, too. Oh, and you’ve no problem multitasking either, because you’re use to switching between different languages and grammatical structures.

Another benefit is memory. We know you’re not getting old anytime soon, but if you manage to regularly practice two or more languages, than this can help prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia later on. It’s all about training your brain, think of speaking English like a cranial workout, you want to stay fit and healthy, don’t you? I wonder if speaking six languages would be the equivalent of a six pack…

In addition, Merritt argues that if you speak a foreign language, you become more perceptive and better at decision-making, too. Not only that, but you actually improve your own native language as well. Now how does that work? Well, Merritt highlights that learning another language ‘draws your focus to the mechanics of language. This makes you more aware [and] a more effective communicator.’

All these benefits, makes me think that Inspire should go on a language course in one of your home countries…
